W10721967 Washer Pulley Clutch Kit & W10006384 Drive Belt

Key Features

  • Complete Drive System Overhaul: This bundled kit includes both the heavy-duty splutch (clutch/pulley) assembly and a high-tensile drive belt, addressing the two most common points of failure in modern top-load washer transmissions.
  • Upgraded Cam Design: The W10721967 splutch kit features a reinforced plastic cam and a high-tension steel spring designed to fully engage and disengage the drive shaft without the stripping and grinding associated with older designs.
  • Precision Ribbed Drive Belt: The included W10006384 belt is manufactured from industrial-grade, heat-resistant rubber with deep V-groove ribs to grip the motor and transmission pulleys tightly, preventing slippage under heavy wet loads.
  • Restores Agitation & Spin: Eliminates the loud, metallic grinding noises that occur when the washer attempts to shift between the agitation cycle and the high-speed spin cycle.
  • Direct OEM Fitment: Engineered to exact factory specifications for the VMW (Vertical Modular Washer) platform, ensuring perfect alignment and tension right out of the box.

Compatibility & Fitment

This repair kit is designed specifically for the widely used Vertical Modular Washer (VMW) platform. Compatible brands include:

  • Whirlpool
  • Maytag
  • Kenmore / Sears
  • Amana
  • Roper
  • Crosley
  • Admiral
  • Inglis

When to Replace

  • Loud Grinding Noise: A harsh, chattering, or grinding noise coming from the bottom of the washer during the shift from washing to spinning indicates the splutch teeth have stripped.
  • Washer Will Not Spin or Agitate: You hear the motor humming underneath, but the tub does not move. This means the belt has snapped, or the splutch cam is completely broken.
  • Burning Rubber Smell: If the splutch jams, the motor will continue to spin against a stationary belt, melting the rubber and creating a strong burning odor.
  • Error Codes: Modern VMW washers may flash an optical sensor or shift actuator error code (such as F7E1 or F7E5) if the splutch fails to engage properly.

Installation Tips

  • Safety First: CRITICAL: Unplug the washer from the wall outlet. Tape the lid shut so it does not flop open, and carefully lean the washer back against a wall (or lay it on its front) to access the underside.
  • Remove the Shield: You will need to remove the plastic protective cover (usually held by two 5/16" screws) to access the belt and pulley system.
  • Belt Rolling Technique: PRO TIP: Do not try to stretch the new belt over both pulleys at once. Hook it onto the small motor pulley first, start it on the edge of the large splutch pulley, and slowly rotate the large pulley by hand to "roll" the belt into place.
  • Check the Shift Actuator: While you are replacing the splutch, inspect the optical Shift Actuator (the small part with wires mounted next to the splutch). If its plastic arm is broken, it will also need to be replaced.
  • Recalibrate the Washer: CRITICAL: After installing these parts, you must put the washer into diagnostic mode and run the automatic recalibration cycle. If you skip this step, the main control board will not recognize the new belt tension, and the washer may not operate correctly.

FAQ

This kit is compatible with a wide range of top-load washers from Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, Crosley, Inglis, Admiral, and Roper. It is specifically designed to fit models such as WTW5000DW1, MVWX655DW1, NTW4516FW2, NTW4600YQ0, and many others within this series.
The W10721967 clutch kit replaces W10006352, W10006353, W10006354, W10006356, W10006382, W10239973, W10315818, W10326374, W10536113, W10721967VP, W10818965, W11396423, 3319979, AP4514411, AP5951296, PS2579381, and PS10057144. The W10006384 drive belt replaces WPW10006384, WPW10006384VP, 1871380, 4440023, 5PJE 556, LB6384, AP6014712, EAP11747978, and PS11747978.
If your washer is making a loud grinding or squealing noise during the agitation or spin cycles, it is often a sign that the clutch assembly is worn. Other symptoms include the drum failing to spin properly, the machine struggling to transition between wash and spin cycles, or clothes remaining excessively wet after the cycle completes.
This is a moderate DIY repair that typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete. You will need a 13mm socket, a 5/16-inch nut driver, and a pair of pliers. Always ensure the washer is unplugged and the water supply is turned off before beginning work.
The drive belt can sometimes be a tight fit. If you find it difficult to stretch over the motor and drum pulleys, you can soak the belt in warm water for a few minutes to make it more pliable, which makes the installation process much easier.
Yes, it is highly recommended to replace both components together. Since both parts are located in the same area and involve the same disassembly process, replacing them simultaneously ensures optimal performance and prevents the need to reopen the machine if the older, worn belt fails shortly after the clutch repair.
