SP-KFA1009 / VE53F Heater Spark Plug
Key Features
- High-Tension Ignition Electrodes: Engineered from a specialized, heat-resistant alloy designed to generate a consistent, high-intensity spark across a wide range of ambient temperatures, ensuring reliable ignition in sub-zero conditions.
- Premium Grade Ceramic Insulator: Features a high-density ceramic body that provides superior electrical insulation, preventing high-voltage "leakage" to the heater chassis and directing the full electrical discharge to the fuel stream.
- Soot & Carbon Resistance: The electrode geometry is optimized to reduce the accumulation of carbon and soot deposits, maintaining a clear spark path even during extended runs or when using lower-grade fuels.
- Industrial Heat Stabilization: Manufactured to withstand the extreme internal combustion temperatures of high-BTU forced-air heaters without warping or losing electrical conductivity over time.
Replaces / Cross-Reference Part Numbers
- Primary Part: SP-KFA1009.
- Industry Standards: VE53F, DFA400T2.
- GHP Group Codes: 2154-0013-00, 2154001300.
Compatibility & Fitment
This spark plug is the primary ignition component for large-capacity (120K to 210K BTU) forced-air kerosene and diesel heaters. Key compatible brands and models include:
- Dyna-Glo: Fits models KFA125DGD, KFA125H, KFA125L, KFA125WH, KFA170DGD, KFA170WH, KFA210DGD, and KFA210H.
- Dura Heat: Compatible with various DFA series heaters including DFA125, DFA170, DFA170T, and DFA210.
- Thermoheat: Direct fit for high-BTU models such as KFA125 and KFA170 series.
- Multi-Fuel Units: Designed for heaters rated between 120,000 and 210,000 BTU that utilize kerosene, diesel, JP8, or Jet A fuel.
- Note: Not compatible with smaller 45K-80K BTU heaters, which often utilize a different electrode mounting bracket.
When to Replace
- Heater Won't Ignite: The most common symptom; the fan runs and fuel is misting, but there is no "clicking" sound or spark to light the fuel.
- Delayed Ignition: The heater "puffs" white smoke for several seconds before finally igniting with a loud boom, indicating a weak or inconsistent spark.
- Cracked Ceramic Insulator: Visible hairline fractures in the white ceramic allow the spark to jump to the metal frame rather than the fuel nozzle.
- Heavy Carbon Buildup: The electrodes are covered in a thick, black crust that prevents a clean spark from bridging the gap.
- Eroded Electrodes: Upon inspection, the metal tips of the spark plug are significantly shortened or rounded off from years of use, making the gap too wide for the transformer to jump.
Installation Tips
- Safety First: **CRITICAL:** Always unplug the heater from the power source before performing maintenance. The ignition transformer produces several thousand volts.
- Check the Spark Gap: **PRO TIP:** Before installing, use a feeler gauge to verify the electrode gap. For most 120K-210K BTU heaters, the ideal gap is approximately 0.14" to 0.16" (3.5mm to 4.0mm).
- Clean the Photocell: While you have the burner head open, wipe the "Cad Cell" (flame sensor) with a soft cloth. A dirty sensor will cause the heater to shut down even if the new spark plug works perfectly.
- Nozzle Alignment: Ensure the spark plug is centered over the fuel nozzle. If it is tilted, the spark may not hit the fuel mist correctly, leading to starting failures.
- Tighten Carefully: Secure the mounting screw firmly so the plug doesn't vibrate out of alignment, but be careful not to over-tighten and crack the ceramic body.
