This 9/64" (3.5mm) pull cord is universal and compatible with a wide range of outdoor power equipment, including chainsaws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, and trimmers from brands such as STIHL, Poulan, Husqvarna, Sears, Echo, Craftsman, and Honda.
You should replace your starter rope if you notice fraying, thinning, or visible wear along the length of the cord. If the rope snaps during use or feels 'mushy' and stretched when pulling, it is at risk of breaking and should be replaced immediately to prevent the recoil spring from snapping back unexpectedly.
The installation typically requires a screwdriver or socket set to remove the recoil starter housing, a pair of needle-nose pliers to help guide the rope, and a sharp utility knife or heat source (like a lighter) to cut and seal the ends of the new rope to prevent fraying.
For most users, replacing the starter rope takes between 15 to 30 minutes. The process involves removing the starter assembly, extracting the old cord, winding the new rope onto the pulley while maintaining proper spring tension, and securing it to the starter handle.
When installing, ensure you do not over-tension the recoil spring. It is helpful to melt the cut end of the new rope slightly with a lighter to create a clean, tapered tip, which makes it much easier to thread through the pulley and the starter handle.
Starter rope failure is most commonly caused by friction against the housing eyelet, exposure to harsh outdoor elements, or improper pulling technique—such as pulling at an angle rather than straight out. Over time, the internal fibers break down, leading to sudden snapping.
