This foam filter replaces Briggs & Stratton OEM part numbers 4248, 5434, 5434K, and 799579.
For optimal engine performance and to maintain EPA emission standards, the air filter should be inspected before every use. Replace the filter at least once per season, or more frequently if you are mowing in dry, dusty, or heavy-debris conditions.
A restricted filter often causes the engine to run rough, lose power, or struggle to start. You may also notice excessive black smoke from the exhaust or higher-than-normal fuel consumption, as the engine is forced to work harder to pull in air.
Installation is a simple, tool-free process that takes less than two minutes. Typically, you simply unclip the air cleaner cover on the side of the engine, remove the old foam element, wipe out any loose debris from the housing, and seat the new filter into place before snapping the cover back on.
This filter should be installed clean and dry. Do not apply oil to the foam element, as it can restrict airflow and cause the engine to run overly rich, leading to carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.
