This is a 7x19 strand core steel cable. This configuration provides a high degree of flexibility while maintaining significant strength, making it ideal for applications involving pulleys or winches, such as boat lifts and dock rigging.
The kit includes a 50-foot length of 5/16-inch wire rope, 8 wire rope clip clamps, and 8 thimbles. This provides enough hardware to create secure loops at both ends of the cable.
When installing the clips, ensure the 'U' bolt is placed over the dead end (the short end) of the rope and the saddle is placed on the live end (the load-bearing side). Never 'saddle a dead horse' by reversing this orientation, as it will significantly weaken the connection. We recommend using at least three clips per connection for maximum safety.
While the steel construction is durable for outdoor use, saltwater environments are highly corrosive. To extend the life of the cable, we recommend regular inspections for signs of rust or fraying and the application of a marine-grade lubricant or corrosion inhibitor.
Thimbles are essential for preventing the wire rope from kinking or crushing at the loop connection point. By maintaining the natural bend radius of the cable, the thimble protects the rope from wear and significantly increases the integrity of the attachment point under tension.
You will need a pair of heavy-duty wire rope cutters or a hacksaw to trim the cable to length, and a socket wrench or adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts on the wire rope clips. A pair of pliers may also be helpful for seating the thimble inside the loop.
