502843101 Recoil Starter Assembly for Redmax & Husqvarna

Key Features

  • High-Torque Recoil Spring: Features a precision-tempered steel spring designed to provide consistent tension and rapid rope retraction across thousands of start cycles in professional environments.
  • Reinforced Pull Rope: Equipped with an industrial-grade, multi-strand braided nylon cord that resists fraying and snapping during high-compression cold starts.
  • Impact-Resistant Polymer Housing: Manufactured from high-density, heat-stabilized polymer to withstand the extreme vibrations and high operating temperatures typical of 50cc+ backpack blowers.
  • Ergonomic Starter Handle: Includes a wide, textured grip handle designed for maximum leverage and comfortable operation, even when wearing thick work gloves.
  • Direct OEM-Spec Fitment: Engineered as a precision "drop-in" replacement for original Redmax and Husqvarna units, ensuring perfect alignment with the flywheel pawls and mounting points.

Replaces / Cross-Reference Part Numbers

  • Husqvarna / Redmax: 502843101, 502 84 31-01
  • Redmax Original: 68206-75010, 6820675010
  • Echo: A051001520
  • Other: 150BT-01

Compatibility & Fitment

This recoil starter is a standard replacement for the high-performance 50cc to 60cc blower platforms. Key compatible models include:

  • Husqvarna: 150BT, 150BF, 350BT, 350BF.
  • Redmax: EBZ5100, EBZ5100Q, EBZ5150.
  • Echo: EB630, EB630(EPA), EB630RT.
  • Note: While many starters look similar, ensure your 4-bolt mounting pattern matches the circular orientation of the 502843101 series.

When to Replace

  • Rope Won't Retract: The internal recoil spring has snapped or become unhooked, leaving the pull cord hanging loosely from the blower.
  • Slipping or "Grinding": The internal plastic pulley or the starter dogs (pawls) are worn down, causing the starter to spin without engaging the engine flywheel.
  • Cracked Housing: The black plastic casing is cracked around the mounting bolts, leading to internal component misalignment and frequent rope breakage.
  • Seized Pulley: The internal pulley has melted or jammed due to friction heat or accumulated debris, making it impossible to pull the rope.
  • Broken Starter Handle: The handle has snapped or the rope has pulled through the knot, posing a safety risk during starting.

Installation Tips

  • Clear Debris: Before bolting on the new unit, use compressed air to blow out any grass, leaves, or sawdust from the flywheel area to prevent the new mechanism from jamming.
  • Hand-Thread the Bolts: Always thread the 4 mounting screws by hand first. Since these thread into the engine shroud, using an impact wrench immediately can easily cross-thread or strip the holes.
  • Check the Pawls: Inspect the metal starter pawls (dogs) on your engine's flywheel. If they are stuck with sap or dirt, clean them with a bit of degreaser so they can swing out and grab the new starter pulley.
  • The "Engagement" Pull: To extend the life of your new starter, pull the handle slowly until you feel the dogs engage the flywheel, then give it a short, sharp pull to start. Avoid "snapping" the rope at full extension.
  • Anti-Seize: A tiny dab of anti-seize or grease on the mounting bolts can make future removals much easier, especially for commercial blowers exposed to the elements.

Please note it is not compatible with the Echo PB-250LN or RedMax 8500 series.
This unit replaces several OEM part numbers, including 502843101, A051001520, 68206-75010, T403075100, 148775101, and 148775100.
You likely need a replacement if the starter rope is frayed or snapped, if the recoil spring has lost tension and no longer retracts the rope, or if the starter claw is damaged and fails to engage the engine cup when you pull the handle.
Replacing the recoil starter is a straightforward repair that typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. You will generally only need a socket set or a screwdriver to remove the housing bolts securing the starter assembly to the engine shroud. Ensure the engine is cool before beginning.
When installing the new assembly, ensure the starter claw is properly aligned with the engine cup. If the rope does not retract smoothly, check that the housing is seated flush against the engine casing to prevent binding. Do not over-tighten the mounting screws, as this can crack the plastic housing.
