400-480 uF 165 VAC CD60 Universal Round Motor Start Capacitor

Key Features

  • High-Torque Initiation: Specifically engineered to provide the massive electrical "boost" required to overcome the static inertia of heavy-duty AC motors, ensuring a rapid and reliable start every time.
  • Moisture-Resistant Phenolic Case: Encased in a rugged, non-conductive phenolic resin housing designed to withstand high-humidity environments and protect internal electrolytic components from environmental degradation.
  • Wide Capacitance Range: Offers a flexible 400-480 uF (Microfarads) rating, making it a versatile universal replacement for a broad spectrum of motor-driven machinery requiring high starting torque.
  • Dual-Frequency Compatibility: Rated for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz electrical systems, ensuring stable performance across various international power standards and industrial applications.
  • 1/4-Inch Male Spade Terminals: Features standardized quick-connect terminals that allow for easy, tool-free installation or replacement in existing motor control boxes or capacitor housings.

Replaces / Cross-Reference Part Numbers

  • Primary Series: CD60, CD60A, CD60-B.
  • Industry Standards: 400-480 MFD, 400-480 uF at 110V / 125V / 165V.

Compatibility & Fitment

This universal CD60 start capacitor is a standard electrical component for a wide array of single-phase AC induction motors. Common applications include:

  • Workshop Machinery: Fits many table saws, drill presses, and wood lathes from brands like Delta, Grizzly, and Jet.
  • HVAC & Refrigeration: Replacement for air conditioning compressors and commercial refrigeration fan motors.
  • Pumping Systems: Ideal for well pumps, sump pumps, and pool pumps from manufacturers like Hayward, Pentair, and Goulds.
  • Air Compressors: Compatible with various portable and stationary compressors (e.g., Craftsman, Porter-Cable, Campbell Hausfeld).
  • Note: This is a Start Capacitor, designed for intermittent duty. It is not intended for use as a Run Capacitor (which is typically rated at a lower uF and higher voltage).

When to Replace

  • Motor Hums but Won't Spin: The most classic symptom; the motor receives power and "tries" to move but lacks the initial torque boost from the capacitor to rotate the shaft.
  • Bulging or Leaking Casing: Physical deformation, "swelling," or the presence of oily residue on the capacitor indicates internal electrolytic failure.
  • Slow Starting: The motor takes several seconds to reach operating speed or requires a manual "shove" to begin rotating.
  • Tripping Breakers on Start: A shorted capacitor can cause a sudden amperage spike that trips the circuit breaker the moment the motor is switched on.
  • Multimeter Test: When tested with a capacitance meter, the reading is significantly lower than 400 uF or displays an "OL" (Open Loop) error.

Installation Tips

  • SAFETY FIRST - Discharge the Capacitor: Even if the power is off, capacitors can store a lethal electrical charge. Use a high-ohm resistor or a localized discharge tool to bridge the terminals before touching them.
  • Check Your Ratings: You can typically replace a capacitor with one of a higher Voltage rating (e.g., using a 250V for a 165V application), but the uF rating must match your original motor specifications within ±10%.
  • Non-Polarized Terminals: As an AC start capacitor, there is no "positive" or "negative" side. Wires can be attached to either terminal without affecting performance.
  • Secure Mounting: Use the original mounting bracket or a zip-tie to ensure the capacitor is secured against vibration; excessive movement can cause terminal leads to fatigue and snap.
  • Bleeder Resistor: If your original capacitor has a resistor soldered across the terminals, transfer it to the new unit or install a new one to assist in safe discharging between starts.
