FAQs

This element is designed for dryers with the lint filter located on the top right near the control housing. It is compatible with a wide range of models under the Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, Roper, Admiral, and Crosley brands, including WED4815EW1 and WED5000DW2.
This part replaces OEM number 279838. It also cross-references with several other numbers, including 2406026, 3403585, W10724237, 279837, 4531017, and 4617547.
The most common symptom is a dryer that runs but fails to produce heat. Before replacing the element, check your dryer's thermal fuse and thermostats for continuity, as these components often fail alongside or instead of the element itself.
This part is often referred to as the 'shorty' element due to its compact size. It replaced the larger, older heating element design (part number 4391960) used in previous generations of Whirlpool-manufactured dryers.
Always inspect your dryer's venting system for blockages. Restricted airflow is the leading cause of premature heating element failure, as it forces the element to overheat and burn out. Cleaning your vent hose and the exhaust duct leading outside will help ensure the new part lasts.
Replacing the heating element is a standard repair that typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. You will generally need a screwdriver (Phillips or flathead) and a putty knife to release the clips on the front or top panel of the dryer. Always disconnect the power supply before beginning any work.
