WPW10498976 Refrigerator Ice Maker Water Inlet Valve

Key Features

  • Dual-Solenoid Control: Features two independent electromagnetic coils—one dedicated to the ice maker and one for the water dispenser—ensuring precise flow for each function.
  • Optimized Pressure Regulation: Specifically calibrated to maintain the correct flow rate for Whirlpool-built refrigerators, preventing ice tray overfilling and splashing.
  • Quick-Connect Fittings: Equipped with push-to-connect ports for 1/4" and 5/16" plastic tubing, allowing for a tool-free and leak-resistant connection to the internal water lines.
  • Stainless Steel Mesh Screens: Integrated internal filters at the intake ports protect the valve diaphragms from sediment and pipe scale.

Compatibility & Fitment

This valve is a standard replacement for many side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators. Key compatible brands include:

  • Whirlpool: Fits various WRF, WRS, and WRX models (e.g., WRF736SDAM, WRS325FDAM).
  • Maytag: Compatible with many MFI, MFF, and MSD series refrigerators (e.g., MFI2570WEM).
  • Kenmore / Sears: Fits various 106-series and 596-series models manufactured by Whirlpool.
  • Amana & KitchenAid: Compatible with select units utilizing the WPW10498976 dual-valve configuration.

When to Replace

  • No Ice or Water: The ice maker cycle triggers and you hear a click, but no water enters the tray, or the water dispenser fails to flow.
  • Leaking at the Rear: Visible water dripping from the back of the refrigerator where the main water line connects.
  • Ice Maker Overfilling: The valve fails to shut off completely, causing water to overflow the ice mold and freeze into a solid block in the bucket.
  • Loud Vibrating Noise: A loud humming or "jackhammer" sound when you attempt to dispense water, indicating a failing solenoid coil.
  • Small Ice Cubes: Low water pressure caused by a partially clogged or failing valve results in hollow or undersized ice cubes.

Installation Tips

  • Safety First: Unplug the refrigerator and shut off the main water supply line before starting the repair.
  • Drain the Lines: Dispense the remaining water from the door to relieve pressure in the system before disconnecting the tubing.
  • Tubing Removal: To release the water lines from the quick-connect fittings, push the outer ring (collet) inward toward the valve body while pulling the tube outward.
  • Wiring: The electrical connectors are usually color-coded to match the solenoid coils (often red and blue). Ensure they are firmly seated on the new terminals.
  • Leak Test: After installation, turn the water on and check for drips at the fittings. Dispense several gallons of water to flush air from the lines before letting the ice maker run.

FAQ

This valve is commonly used on select Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and some KitchenAid refrigerators that use part number WPW10498976 or one of its matching replacements. Web references also associate it with several Whirlpool-built refrigerator series such as GB2, GB9, GX2, GX5, MBF, MBL, MBR, MFF, WRB, and WRF. Because fitment can vary within the same series, the safest check is to match your refrigerator model number and existing valve part number.
Known replacements and cross-references for this valve include WPW10498976, W10498976, 2315508, W10420082, W10498974, K-78186, PS11755667, WP2315576, 2315576, AP6022334, K-78200, WV8047, 4318047, IMV-494, 12001415, and PS358631. Matching one of these numbers is a good sign you have the correct replacement.
This valve controls the flow of household water into the refrigerator’s ice maker and, on applicable models, the water dispenser. It opens and closes electrically through solenoids to allow the correct amount of water into the appliance.
Typical symptoms include the ice maker not filling, slow or no water from the dispenser, very small or hollow ice cubes, water leaking near the valve area, or the ice maker overfilling. A failed solenoid can also cause one function to stop working while the other still works, depending on how your refrigerator is configured.
On many refrigerators, this is a moderate repair that takes about 20 to 45 minutes. You usually need a screwdriver, a small wrench or nut driver, and a towel to catch any residual water. Before starting, unplug the refrigerator and shut off the household water supply. The valve is commonly mounted at the back of the refrigerator near the lower access area.
Before replacing the valve, check that the home water supply is turned on, the supply line is not kinked, the inlet screen is not clogged with sediment, and the freezer temperature is cold enough for the ice maker to cycle properly. If your model has both dispenser and ice maker issues, the valve is a stronger suspect. If only the ice maker is affected, also inspect the ice maker assembly, fill tube, and any frozen blockage.
Common causes include mineral buildup from hard water, sediment clogging the inlet screen, coil or solenoid failure, pressure-related wear, and internal sticking after long use. In some cases, low water pressure or a partially blocked supply line can mimic a bad valve, so it is worth checking water flow before installation.
