300486 43cc Carburetor Tune-Up Kit for Tillers and Edgers

Key Features

  • Precision Air-Fuel Delivery: Specifically calibrated for 43cc and 51.7cc 2-stroke engines to provide a stable idle and smooth high-RPM performance under heavy soil or edging loads.
  • Enhanced Cold Starting: Features an integrated primer bulb system and high-response internal diaphragm to ensure fast, reliable ignition in various outdoor conditions.
  • Durable Alloy Construction: Manufactured from a high-density, corrosion-resistant alloy designed to withstand the high vibration and debris environments typical of garden cultivation.
  • Ethanol-Compatible Internals: Equipped with updated needle valves and gaskets engineered to resist the "gumming" and hardening effects of modern ethanol-blended fuels.
  • Complete Installation Kit: Includes the carburetor assembly, mounting gaskets, fuel lines, and spare primer bulbs for a total fuel system refresh.

Compatibility & Fitment

This carburetor is a universal replacement for many 43cc and 52cc 2-stroke engines used in lawn and garden equipment. Key compatible models include:

  • Earthquake Tillers: MC43, E43, MC43CE, MC43E, MD43, and 2-cycle cultivators.
  • Powermate Edgers & Augers: PEA438, PCV43, and 43cc walk-behind edgers.
  • Ardisam / Eskimo: Mako M43, 51.7cc Shark augers, and various power heads.
  • Poulan / Poulan Pro: PR2322 (Hedge Trimmer), PR48BT (Backpack Blower).
  • Southland / Tazz: Various 43cc 2-cycle tillers and edgers.

When to Replace

  • Engine Surging or "Hunting": The RPM fluctuates wildly at a steady throttle, often caused by a lean fuel mixture due to a restricted internal jet.
  • Starts Only on Fluid: The engine will only fire if starting fluid is sprayed into the intake, confirming the carburetor is not pulling fuel from the tank.
  • Fuel Leaks: Gasoline drips from the air filter housing or the primer bulb area while the engine is off or running.
  • Engine Bogs Under Load: The engine idles fine but dies as soon as the tiller tines hit the dirt or the edger blade engages.
  • Brittle Primer Bulb: The clear primer bulb has yellowed, cracked, or stays "sunk in" after being pressed, preventing fuel priming.

Installation Tips

  • Drain the Old Fuel: Before installing the new carburetor, drain the gas tank and replace the fuel lines. Installing a new carb with "varnished" old gas will clog it immediately.
  • Check the Gasket Orientation: Ensure the tiny pulse hole on the mounting gasket aligns perfectly with the hole on the engine block. If misaligned, the carburetor's internal fuel pump won't work.
  • Prime the System: Once installed, press the primer bulb 5–10 times until you see fuel circulating through the clear return line back into the tank.
  • Throttle Linkage: Note the position of the throttle cable "Z-bend" before removal. If the cable is slightly bent during installation, the engine may not reach full speed or may have a dangerously high idle.
  • Spark Plug Inspection: Since 2-stroke engines are prone to carbon buildup, it is highly recommended to replace the spark plug at the same time as the carburetor.

FAQ

This carburetor is compatible with a wide range of 43cc and 51.7cc 2-cycle engines, including Earthquake E43, E43CE, E43WC, MC43, MC43CE, MC43E, MC43ECE, MC43RCE, MD43, WE43, WE43E, and WE43CE. It also fits Powermate models PEA438, PCV43, and PWSTM4317, as well as Southland SCV43, SEA43, and SWSTM4317 series equipment.
This unit replaces OEM part numbers 300486, A200774, and A201112. It is also compatible with the WYK-74 carburetor specification.
You likely need a replacement if your engine is struggling to start, idling roughly, stalling during operation, or experiencing a noticeable loss of power under load. These symptoms are often caused by internal fuel passages becoming clogged or the diaphragm hardening over time.
The most common cause of failure for these small 2-cycle carburetors is the use of ethanol-blended gasoline. Ethanol attracts moisture and can leave behind gummy deposits that block the tiny internal jets and degrade the internal rubber components, especially if the equipment is stored for long periods without being drained.
When replacing the carburetor, it is highly recommended to inspect your fuel lines for cracks or brittleness and replace them if necessary. You should also replace the fuel filter and the spark plug to ensure the engine runs at peak performance. Always ensure the mounting gasket is seated properly to prevent air leaks, which can cause the engine to run lean and overheat.
Installation is straightforward and typically takes 20 to 45 minutes for most users. You will generally need a basic socket set or wrench to remove the air cleaner housing and the carburetor mounting nuts. Be sure to take a photo of the throttle linkage and fuel line routing before disconnecting them to ensure you can reconnect them correctly.
