WB06X10309 / WB06X10359 Over-the-Range Microwave Grease Filter

Key Features

  • Multi-Layer Aluminum Mesh: Constructed with high-density, overlapping layers of aluminum mesh designed to effectively trap airborne grease particles, smoke, and steam generated from your stovetop.
  • Protects Internal Components: Acts as the primary line of defense for your microwave's exhaust fan and motor, preventing sticky grease buildup that can cause the ventilation system to overheat or fail prematurely.
  • Washable & Reusable: Unlike disposable charcoal filters, this aluminum grease filter is designed to be cleaned and reused. Regular washing extends the life of the filter and maintains optimal airflow.
  • Convenient D-Ring Pull Tab: Features a built-in metal D-ring tab on the frame, allowing for quick, tool-free removal and installation when it's time for routine maintenance.
  • Improves Kitchen Air Quality: By capturing aerosolized oils before they enter the ductwork or recirculate into the room, it helps keep your kitchen surfaces cleaner and reduces lingering cooking odors.

Compatibility & Fitment

This universal-style grease filter fits hundreds of over-the-range microwaves equipped with a bottom ventilation system. Key compatible brands include:

  • GE (General Electric): Fits most GE Profile, Spacemaker, and standard over-the-range models.
  • LG & Kenmore: Compatible with many LG microwaves and Sears Kenmore models manufactured by LG (often substituting part 5230W1A012B).
  • Whirlpool Family: Fits select models across Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, and KitchenAid.
  • Note: Most over-the-range microwaves require two of these filters side-by-side underneath the unit. Always measure your existing filter (approx. 7.6" x 5.1") to guarantee a perfect fit.

When to Replace (or Clean)

  • Visible Grease Dripping: If you notice yellow or brown grease forming droplets on the underside of your microwave, the filter is fully saturated and requires immediate cleaning.
  • Poor Ventilation: When boiling water or searing meat, if the steam and smoke roll off the front of the microwave instead of being sucked upward, the mesh is clogged.
  • The 1-to-3 Month Rule: For heavy cooking or frequent frying, the filter should be cleaned every month. For light cooking, clean it every 3 months.
  • Bent or Broken Mesh: If the aluminum frame is warped or the mesh layers have holes/tears from aggressive scrubbing, the filter can no longer trap grease effectively and must be replaced.

Maintenance & Installation Tips

  • The Hot Soak Method (PRO TIP): To clean the filter, fill your sink with very hot water, a generous squirt of grease-cutting dish soap (like Dawn), and a half-cup of baking soda. Let the filter soak for 30–60 minutes to dissolve the grease without scrubbing.
  • Avoid the Dishwasher: While some manuals suggest dishwasher cleaning, harsh dishwasher detergents can oxidize and discolor the delicate aluminum mesh, turning it dull gray or white. Hand washing is highly recommended.
  • Complete Drying Required: Always let the filter air-dry completely before snapping it back into the microwave to prevent pulling moisture up into the electrical components.
  • Easy Installation: To install, slide the edge opposite the pull tab into the retaining slot on the microwave's underside, then push the pull-tab side up until it locks into place.

FAQ

This filter replaces OEM part numbers WB06X10309, WB06X10359, WB06X10654, WB02X25388, WB02X32793, and RHF0503.
These filters are designed for over-the-range microwaves and vent hoods from GE, LG, and Kenmore. They are compatible with a wide range of models, including the JVM1490 series and various SCA1000 series units.
You should replace your grease filter if you notice a buildup of hardened grease that cannot be removed with standard degreasing agents, if the metal mesh is damaged or bent, or if you notice a decrease in suction power from your vent hood. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can cause the microwave to overheat or allow grease to accumulate on your cabinetry.
Each filter measures 7.64 inches by 5.12 inches (approximately 7-5/8" x 5"). We recommend measuring your existing filter before ordering to ensure a proper fit.
Installation is simple and requires no tools. Most over-the-range microwaves feature a small latch or a pull-tab on the filter itself. Simply slide the old filter out, insert the new one into the track, and ensure the latch clicks securely into place. The entire process typically takes less than two minutes.
While these filters are designed to be cleaned periodically with warm, soapy water or a degreaser, they eventually lose their effectiveness. Depending on your cooking habits and how often you use the vent fan, we recommend replacing them every 6 to 12 months to maintain optimal airflow and fire safety.
