964P3 Dryer Heating Element Kit

Key Features

  • High-Output Nickel-Chrome Coils: Engineered with premium nickel-chromium alloy wire designed to reach optimal drying temperatures rapidly while maintaining high resistance to thermal fatigue and "sagging" over long cycles.
  • Heavy-Duty Galvanized Housing: The heating element is encased in a corrosion-resistant, galvanized steel box that provides structural integrity and reflects radiant heat directly into the drum for maximum efficiency.
  • Integrated Safety Thermal Fuse: Includes a calibrated thermal fuse designed to act as a "one-time" safety link, cutting power to the heating circuit if internal temperatures exceed safe limits, preventing fire hazards.
  • 5100W / 240V Industrial Specification: Rated at 5100 Watts to match the high-performance standards of Speed Queen appliances, ensuring consistent "commercial-grade" drying times in a residential environment.
  • Full Kit Set: 1 x Dryer Heating Element, 1 x High Limit Thermostat, 1 x Dryer Thermal Fuse, 4 x Connecting Cables, 2 x Caps, 5 x Screws.

Replaces / Cross-Reference Part Numbers

  • 964P3 Dryer Heating Element Kit: 61927, 61928, 61929, Y503978, 510329, 510329p, 503404, 56047, 56179, 56176, 2304695, AP4489047, PS12210200, EAP12210200

Compatibility & Fitment

This heating element kit is the primary heat source for many modern Speed Queen and Alliance Laundry Systems dryers. Key compatible models include:

  • Speed Queen ADE Series: Fits ADE3LRGS171TW01, ADE3SRGS175TW01, ADE3SRGS173TW01, ADE4BRGS176TW01, and ADE9RYS177TW01.
  • Speed Queen Mechanical & Electronic: Compatible with various LDEM, LDE, and ADEM series front-control and rear-control dryers.
  • Huebsch & Alliance: Direct fit for dozens of commercial-grade residential units produced by Alliance Laundry Systems.
  • Note: This is a 240-Volt Electric heating element. It is not compatible with gas dryers. It is typically located behind the Back Panel of the dryer cabinet.

When to Replace

  • Dryer Runs but No Heat: The most common symptom; the heating coil has developed a "break" or the thermal fuse has blown, preventing the air from warming up.
  • Dryer Takes Multiple Cycles: If the coil is partially shorted or damaged, it may not reach full wattage, significantly extending drying times.
  • Dryer Won't Start: On many Speed Queen models, a blown thermal fuse (included in this kit) will prevent the motor from even turning on as a safety precaution.
  • Visible Coil Break: Upon inspection of the heater box, you can see a physical gap or "melted" section in the spiral heating wire.
  • Continuity Failure: Testing with a multimeter shows "Open" (no continuity) across the two main terminals of the heating element or the thermal fuse.

Installation Tips

  • Safety First: You MUST unplug the dryer or turn off the 240V double-pole circuit breaker. High-voltage electricity is present at the heater terminals.
  • Vacuum the Heater Box: Before installing the new 503978, use a vacuum to remove all lint from the internal ducting. Lint buildup is the #1 cause of heating element and thermal fuse failure.
  • Clean the Vents: If your heating element failed, your house vent is likely clogged. Check the exterior vent hood and the entire duct run to ensure maximum airflow, or your new element may burn out quickly.
  • Terminal Inspection: Check the female wire connectors on your dryer's harness. If they look burnt or loose, they must be cut off and replaced with high-temperature terminals to prevent arcing.
  • Handle with Care: Do not stretch or compress the new coils during installation. Ensure the coil is not touching the metal housing at any point, as this will cause an immediate short circuit.

FAQ

This kit fits Speed Queen dryer models including ADE3LRGS171TW01, ADE3SRGS175TW01, ADE3SRGS173TW01, ADE4BRGS176TW01, and ADE9RYS177TW01. This heater family is also compatible with Alliance-built dryers and selected Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Crosley, Admiral, and Magic Chef dryers. Because dryer parts can vary by full model and production code, match your complete model number and the original heater part number before ordering.
This kit replaces part numbers 503978, 964P3, 61927, and 2304695. Additional cross-references for this heater family include WPY503978, Y503978, 510329, 510329P, D510329P, 510325, 510325P, 61195, 503404, 56047, 56179, 56176, 61928, 61929, R0610067, D518199, D518838P, and 1914.
Common symptoms include no heat, weak heat, very long dry times, or a dryer that tumbles normally but never warms up. A blown thermal fuse or thermal cut-out can cause the same no-heat symptom, which is why this kit includes a fuse. If the dryer runs but does not heat at all, you should check the heater circuit, thermal fuse, high-limit protection, and power supply.
For many dryer designs, this is a moderate repair. Typical tools required include a nut driver or socket set, Phillips screwdriver, flat screwdriver, and a multimeter for confirming continuity. On many units, access is through the rear or lower service area. Expect the process to take roughly 30 to 90 minutes depending on the dryer layout and accessibility of the heater housing. Always unplug the dryer first; if it is an electric dryer, verify the terminal block and heater circuit are de-energized before touching the element.
Before installation, confirm the dryer has the correct supply voltage, as an electric dryer can tumble with only partial power and still produce no heat. Also, inspect the thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat, wiring terminals, and the heater housing for burned connectors. Clean the lint screen, blower housing, and vent line, since restricted airflow is a common cause of element overheating and repeated fuse failure.
The most common cause is restricted airflow from lint buildup, crushed venting, or a blocked exterior vent hood. Poor airflow causes the heater to run too hot, which can warp or break the element coil and trip or blow thermal protection parts. Loose wire terminals, damaged insulators, or operating the dryer with a damaged cycling thermostat can also shorten the life of the heater.
