FAQ

This coupling is used on many direct-drive top-load washers built under multiple brands, including Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, Admiral, Magic Chef, Roper, Estate, Inglis, Crosley, and some listings also reference General Electric. It is commonly associated with Kenmore 70/80/90 Series and many model 110 washers, as well as Whirlpool-built direct-drive machines. Because not every washer from these brands uses this style coupler, match your model number and part number before ordering.
Common replacement and cross-reference numbers for this motor coupling kit include 285753A, 285753AVP, 1195967, 21003, 280152, 285140, 285743, 85140, 285753, AP3963893, PS1485646, and EAP1485646.
The motor coupling connects the drive motor to the transmission in a direct-drive washer. It acts as a cushioned link that transfers motor power to the drivetrain while also helping absorb shock during agitation and spin.
A failed coupling often causes the washer to fill and drain normally, but not agitate or spin. In some cases you may hear the motor running while the basket and agitator do not move. You might also find small broken rubber or plastic pieces underneath the machine if the old coupling has come apart.
For many direct-drive top-load washers, this is a moderate repair. Typical installation involves unplugging the washer, shutting off water, removing the cabinet or access components, taking off the pump and motor, and then swapping the coupling pieces on the motor and transmission shafts. Common tools are a flat screwdriver, nut driver or socket set, and pliers. Many DIYers complete the job in about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on washer layout and rust or tight fittings.
Motor couplings usually fail from normal wear, repeated heavy loads, off-balance stress, or a drivetrain problem that makes the motor work harder than normal. If the old coupling is badly shredded or repeatedly breaks, also check for a binding transmission, seized basket, overloaded wash habits, or other drag in the drive system before installing the new one.
Before installation, inspect the motor shaft and transmission input shaft for burrs or damage, and make sure the motor mounts are secure. It is also a good time to check the pump for binding, look for oil leakage from the transmission area, and remove any broken pieces of the old coupling so the new hubs seat fully.
