8206230A Over-the-Range Microwave Charcoal Filter
Key Features
- Activated Carbon Technology: Infused with high-porosity activated charcoal specifically designed to capture and neutralize cooking odors, smoke, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) before the air is recirculated back into your kitchen.
- Essential for Ductless Venting: A critical component for over-the-range microwaves configured for indoor, ductless exhaust, ensuring that your indoor air quality remains fresh and clean.
- Dual-Action Filtration: Works in conjunction with your microwave's exterior aluminum grease filter to catch fine airborne grease particles that bypass the primary metal mesh, preventing buildup on your ceiling and cabinets.
- Exact OEM Dimensions: Precision-manufactured to slide effortlessly into the designated filter slot behind the top air grille, providing a gap-free fit that forces all exhaust air through the carbon media.
- Disposable Convenience: Designed as a simple, hassle-free replacement unit. Once the carbon is saturated with impurities, the entire filter is easily discarded and replaced to maintain peak ventilation performance.

Compatibility & Fitment
This universal charcoal filter is compatible with hundreds of over-the-range microwave models. Key compatible brands include:
- Whirlpool
- KitchenAid
- Maytag
- Amana
- Jenn-Air
- Estate
- Roper
- IKEA (Whirlpool-manufactured models)
When to Replace
- Lingering Cooking Odors: If the smell of bacon or fish lingers in your kitchen long after cooking, the carbon pores in the filter are fully saturated and can no longer absorb odors.
- The 6-Month Rule: For optimal indoor air quality, the manufacturer recommends replacing the charcoal filter every 6 months, or more frequently if you fry or cook with strong spices regularly.
- Visual Grease Buildup: If the black filter material feels sticky or appears caked in yellow grease, it is blocking airflow and needs immediate replacement to prevent the exhaust fan motor from overheating.
- Microwave Feels Hot: A severely clogged filter restricts exhaust flow, causing the exterior of the microwave and the control panel to feel unusually warm during operation.
Installation Tips
- Safety First: CRITICAL: Always unplug the microwave from the wall outlet or turn off the power at the circuit breaker before beginning any maintenance.
- Accessing the Filter: PRO TIP: The filter is located behind the top plastic vent grille (above the microwave door). Open the microwave door to access the two screws securing the top grille, remove the screws, and carefully slide the grille off to the left or right.
- Do Not Wash: Never attempt to wash and reuse a charcoal filter. Water permanently destroys the odor-absorbing properties of the activated carbon.
- Check Orientation: Depending on the model, the filter may need to be inserted at a downward angle. Slide it into the slot until it drops securely into place behind the retaining tabs.
- Clean the Grille: While the top louvered grille is removed, wash it in the sink with warm, soapy water to remove accumulated dust and grease before reinstalling.
