Key Features

  • Constructed from durable rubber with stainless steel screws and handles for corrosion resistance.
  • Designed to fit openings ranging from 1.5 inches to 2 inches in diameter.
  • Creates a watertight seal to prevent water from entering pipes during winterization.
  • Wing nut handle allows for tool-free, manual tightening and expansion.

Replaces / Cross-Reference Part Numbers

  • Universal replacement for winterizing plugs used in 1.5" to 2" pool plumbing fittings.

Compatibility & Fitment

  • Suitable for both in-ground and above-ground swimming pools and spas.
  • Fits standard 1.5" to 2" threaded and smooth-walled openings.
  • Commonly used for skimmer inlets, return lines, and automatic cleaner lines.

When to Replace

  • The rubber shows signs of cracking, hardening, or physical deterioration.
  • A watertight seal can no longer be achieved, resulting in leaks.
  • The metal components are heavily corroded or the threads are stripped.
  • The plug is deformed and does not expand evenly when tightened.

Installation Tips

  • Ensure the inside of the pipe or fitting is clean and free from debris before insertion.
  • Insert the plug into the opening until it is seated firmly.
  • Turn the handle clockwise to expand the rubber and create a seal.
  • Hand-tighten only. Do not overtighten, as this may damage the plug or the pool plumbing.
  • Check for a secure, leak-proof fit after installation.

FAQ

These plugs are commonly used to close pool plumbing openings during winterizing, such as return lines, skimmer ports, and some cleaner or suction line openings that accept a 1.5-inch to 2-inch expansion-style plug. They can be used on both in-ground and above-ground pools, but the opening must match the plug's expansion range.
Measure the inside diameter of the plumbing opening or threaded fitting area where the plug will seal. These plugs are intended for openings in the 1.5-inch to 2-inch range. For the best fit, the rubber body should insert into the opening and then expand snugly as the screw is tightened. If the opening is significantly smaller or larger, the plug may not seal correctly.
Insert the rubber plug into the pool line opening, then tighten the stainless steel screw until the rubber expands and seals against the inside wall. Tighten only until snug and leak-resistant. Overtightening can damage the rubber or put unnecessary stress on the fitting. A basic hand tool such as a wrench or screwdriver, depending on the plug design, is usually all that is needed.
Before installing the plugs, lower the water level as needed for your winterizing method, blow out or drain the plumbing lines if required, and remove debris from the sealing surface. Check the opening for cracks, chipped threads, or old gasket material that could prevent a proper seal. If you use pool antifreeze, add it according to your pool closing procedure before sealing the line.
A loose or undersized plug may allow water back into the line, increasing the risk of freeze damage during winter. An oversized plug may be difficult to insert or may not seat properly. Poor sealing can also lead to slow leaks, loss of antifreeze from the line, or air entering the plumbing when pressure-testing or winterizing.
Installing each plug usually takes only a few minutes once the line is prepared. Most of the time in the job is spent on winterizing steps such as lowering water, clearing the lines, and checking each port before sealing it.
