FAQ

This SP1022C-style plug is designed for pool drain and winterizing ports that feature a 1.5-inch threaded opening. It is compatible with a wide range of Hayward and Pentair pool filter drain plug applications. Because compatibility can vary by model and production year, always confirm that your equipment uses a 1.5-inch threaded drain port and requires a plug matching the SP1022C specification.
This plug is a direct replacement for the SP1022C part. When replacing an existing plug, verify that the threaded size, plug style, and O-ring configuration match your current component before installation.
The O-ring creates a water-tight seal at the drain or winterizing port, preventing leaks during storage and system operation. If your previous plug was leaking, cracked, or difficult to tighten, it is often due to a worn, flattened, or missing O-ring.
Common indicators include water dripping from the drain port, stripped or damaged threads, a cracked plug body, a brittle or missing O-ring, or a plug that no longer seals consistently. We recommend replacing the plug if the original has been overtightened or exposed to multiple seasons of weather and pool chemicals.
First, shut off the pool equipment and relieve all system pressure. Clean the drain port threads, inspect the sealing surface, and ensure the O-ring is properly seated on the plug. Thread the plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it until snug. Avoid overtightening, as this can damage the threads or compress the O-ring excessively.
Inspect the drain port for cracked threads, debris, scale buildup, and remnants of the old seal. Confirm that the port is a 1.5-inch threaded type. It is also advisable to check nearby drain caps, pump basket lids, and other winterizing points, as leaks frequently occur across multiple aged seals simultaneously.
Failure is typically caused by age, UV exposure, chemical degradation, freeze-thaw cycles, and overtightening. Cross-threading during installation can also damage the plug or the housing. Furthermore, the repeated removal and reinstallation required during winterizing cycles gradually wears down the threads and sealing surfaces over time.
