338906 Gas Dryer Flame Sensor & 279311 Igniter & 279834 Gas Valve Solenoid Coils
Key Features
- Complete Burner Restoration: A comprehensive 4-piece kit (1 sensor, 1 igniter, 2 coils) designed to overhaul the entire ignition sequence, ensuring your gas dryer lights reliably and safely every cycle.
- Safety-First Flame Detection: The 338906 flame sensor monitors the heat from the igniter and the burner flame; it acts as a critical safety switch that only allows the gas valve to open when a heat source is detected.
- Rapid-Glow Silicon Carbide Igniter: The 279311 flat-style igniter is manufactured from premium silicon carbide, designed to reach ignition temperatures in seconds while offering superior resistance to thermal shock.
- Dual-Solenoid Valve Control: The 279834 coil set includes both the 2-terminal and 3-terminal solenoids required to lift the internal valve plungers, providing precise control over gas flow to the burner assembly.
- High-Temperature Durability: All components are engineered with heat-stabilized materials specifically rated for the intense thermal environment of the dryer’s burner box and combustion chamber.

Compatibility & Fitment
This ignition kit is the standard maintenance set for the vast majority of Whirlpool-manufactured gas dryers. Key compatible brands include:
- Whirlpool & Maytag: Fits hundreds of LGR, MGD, and GGD series models (e.g., LGR4634EQ2, MGD5500FW, WGD4815EW).
- Kenmore (110 Series): Compatible with nearly all 110-prefix gas dryers produced by Whirlpool for Sears (e.g., 110.70802990).
- Amana, Roper, & Estate: Direct fit for NGD, RGD, and TGD series budget-friendly gas dryers.
- KitchenAid, Magic Chef, & Admiral: Fits various models utilizing the standardized Whirlpool gas valve assembly.
- Note: This kit is exclusively for Gas Dryers. It will not work with electric models which use a heating element coil.
When to Replace
- Dryer Runs but No Heat: The most common symptom—the drum turns and air blows, but the gas never ignites to provide heat.
- Igniter Doesn't Glow: If the 279311 igniter remains dark when the dryer starts, the igniter is likely cracked or the thermal fuse has blown.
- Igniter Glows but Fades (No Flame): If the igniter glows white-hot but then clicks off without a flame appearing, the 279834 coils or the 338906 flame sensor are likely faulty.
- Intermittent Heating: The dryer may provide heat for the first 5–10 minutes but then stop heating for the rest of the cycle as the coils fail once they get warm.
- Faint Gas Smell: If the burner fails to ignite repeatedly, you may notice a slight gas odor; this indicates the ignition sequence is being interrupted.
Installation Tips
- Safety First: You MUST unplug the dryer and shut off the gas supply line before beginning this repair. Safety is the top priority when working with gas components.
- Fragile Igniter: **CRITICAL:** Do not touch the gray/black heating element of the new 279311 igniter with your bare hands. Skin oils can create hot spots that cause the igniter to burn out prematurely.
- Access the Burner: On most models, you can access the burner assembly by removing the small lower front access panel or the entire front cabinet.
- The "Coil Orientation": Pay close attention to the orientation of the 279834 coils. They must be seated fully on the valve stems with the metal bracket secured for the magnetic field to properly lift the internal plungers.
- Test for Leaks: After reassembling and turning the gas back on, use a soap-and-water solution on the gas connections to ensure there are no leaks before running a test cycle.
