1. Turn off furnace power, close gas valve, and remove the front panel. Then locate the flame sensor & Disconnect the wire; 2. Uncrew and remove the old flame sensor & Install the new one, secure it into place, and reconnect wire; 3. Reattach the panel, open gas valve and turn power back on. *Note: Use work gloves during installation for safety. Avoid touching the metal rod part as oils from your skin can cause carbon buildup and premature failure, hold it only by the ceramic base.

The most common symptom is the furnace burner igniting for a few seconds and then shutting off immediately. This cycle often repeats three times before the furnace goes into a lockout mode. This happens because the sensor is unable to detect the flame and signals the control board to cut the gas supply as a safety precaution.
Flame sensors are designed to sit directly in the burner flame. Over time, carbon buildup, oxidation, or debris can accumulate on the sensor rod. This layer acts as an insulator, preventing the sensor from detecting the electrical current flowing through the flame. While cleaning the rod with a fine-grit abrasive pad can sometimes resolve the issue, a replacement is necessary if the rod is cracked, corroded, or if cleaning no longer restores functionality.
Installation is straightforward and typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes. You will generally only need a 1/4-inch nut driver or a screwdriver to remove the single mounting screw and the wire connector. Always ensure the power to the furnace is turned off at the breaker or service switch before beginning the installation.
When installing the new sensor, handle it by the ceramic porcelain base rather than the metal rod. Oils from your skin can leave residue on the rod that may cause premature carbon buildup. Ensure the sensor is positioned so that the rod is placed directly into the path of the burner flame, but verify that it does not make physical contact with the burner itself, as this can cause a short circuit.
