P021012870 Air Cleaner Case Assembly

Key Features

  • Integrated Choke Plate Mechanism: Features a factory-installed manual choke lever and butterfly valve designed to provide the precise air restriction needed for reliable cold starts.
  • High-Impact Structural Polymer: Manufactured from a durable, heat-resistant composite that protects the carburetor and intake system from debris, moisture, and impact damage.
  • Acoustic Dampening Design: The internal geometry of the case is engineered to reduce intake noise while maintaining the high-velocity airflow required for peak engine RPM.
  • Precision Gasket Interface: Designed with a flat, reinforced mounting surface to ensure a vacuum-tight seal against the carburetor, preventing "dirty air" from bypassing the filter.
  • Direct OEM Replacement: A complete housing assembly that aligns perfectly with factory mounting studs and throttle linkages, restoring full air-intake functionality to your equipment.

Compatibility & Fitment

This air cleaner case is the primary intake component for the Echo 21.2cc engine series. Key compatible models include:

  • Echo Trimmers & Edgers: SRM-225, SRM-225i, SRM-225SB, GT-225, GT-225i, GT-225L, PE-225.
  • Echo Hedge Clippers: HC-152, HC-155, HC-165, HC-185, HC-225, SHC-225, SHC-225S.
  • Echo Pruners & Power Heads: PPF-225, PAS-225.
  • Shindaiwa Models: T235, F235, EB212.

When to Replace

  • Broken Choke Lever: The plastic lever has snapped off or the internal linkage has seized, preventing the engine from being choked for cold starts.
  • Cracked Housing: Visible fractures or impact damage to the case which can allow unfiltered air and abrasive dust to enter the carburetor and cylinder.
  • Warped Mounting Flange: The plastic has become distorted due to engine heat, causing a persistent air leak that makes the engine run lean or "surge."
  • Stripped Thread Bosses: The internal threads for the air filter cover screw have stripped out, preventing the filter from staying secured and sealed.
  • Melted Plastic: Significant warping near the muffler side, often caused by a missing heat shield or operating the engine at excessively high temperatures.

Installation Tips

  • Clean the Carburetor Intake: Before mounting the new P021012870 case, use a clean rag to wipe the carburetor flange. Ensure no dirt falls into the intake throat during the swap.
  • Gasket Alignment: Always use a fresh intake gasket between the carburetor and the air cleaner case. Ensure the "pulse hole" in the gasket aligns with the corresponding hole on the case to maintain fuel pump pressure.
  • Choke Linkage Check: Before tightening the mounting bolts, toggle the choke lever to ensure the plate moves freely and doesn't bind against the carburetor throat.
  • Hand-Tighten Mounting Bolts: Use a nut driver to snug the two mounting nuts. Do not over-torque, as the plastic housing can crack or the mounting studs can be pulled through the engine shroud.
  • Inspect the Air Filter: Always install a clean, lightly oiled foam air filter (or fresh paper filter) when replacing the case to ensure your engine receives only purified air from the first start.

FAQ

This assembly is compatible with a wide range of Echo and Shindaiwa equipment, including: GT-225, GT-225L, GT-225SF, GT-225i, HC-152, HC-155, HC-165, HC-185, HC-225, HC-235, HC-245, PAS-225, PAS-225SB, PAS-225VP, PAS-225VPB, PE-225, PPF-225, PPF-235ES, PPT-235ES, SHC-225, SHC-225S, SRM-225, SRM-225i, SRM-225SB, SRM-225U, and SRM-2320T.
You should inspect the air cleaner case if you notice cracks in the plastic housing, stripped screw holes that prevent the air filter cover from sealing properly, or a damaged choke plate mechanism. If the case cannot maintain an airtight seal against the carburetor, the engine may experience rough idling, difficulty starting, or a loss of power due to an improper air-to-fuel mixture.
Installation is straightforward and typically takes about 15–20 minutes. You will primarily need a screwdriver to remove the air filter cover and the mounting screws that secure the case to the carburetor. Ensure the area is clean before removing the old assembly to prevent debris from falling into the carburetor throat.
Since you are already accessing the carburetor area, it is a good time to inspect your air filter for saturation or damage. Additionally, verify that the carburetor mounting gasket is still intact and that the fuel lines are not brittle or leaking. Replacing a worn air filter at the same time as the case assembly ensures your engine receives clean, consistent airflow.
The assembly is made of high-impact plastic, which can become brittle over time due to constant exposure to engine heat and vibration. Additionally, frequent removal of the air filter cover for routine maintenance can eventually strip the plastic threads, preventing a secure seal and allowing unfiltered air to enter the engine.
