FAQ

This cable is used on selected self-propelled walk-behind mowers from Troy-Bilt, MTD, Craftsman, Yard Machines, Yard-Man, and Huskee. Models commonly associated with this part number family include Troy-Bilt TB200, TB210, TB430, and RM410, plus Craftsman M210 and M220. Because these brands share many MTD-built platforms, the safest match is by model number and original part number from your mower.
Known replacement and cross-reference numbers for this cable include 946-04728A, 946-04728, 746-04728A, 746-04728, and Rotary 15102.
This is the self-propel drive control cable for single-speed mowers. When you squeeze the drive handle, the cable pulls the transmission or drive engagement linkage so the mower moves forward. If the cable stretches, binds, or breaks, the engine may still run normally but the mower will not self-propel correctly.
Typical signs include the mower no longer pulling itself, weak or inconsistent self-propel operation, a drive bail that feels loose or has too much slack, or a cable that is visibly frayed, kinked, or broken at one end. In some cases, the mower only drives when the handle is squeezed extremely hard because the inner wire has stretched.
On most walk-behind mowers, this is a moderate repair that usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Typical tools are a screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and possibly a small socket or nut driver. The old cable is disconnected from the handle, released from any frame clips, and then unhooked from the transmission or drive bracket before routing the new one the same way.
Before replacement, compare both cable ends, the outer housing length, and the routing style to your original cable. Also inspect the drive handle, cable anchors, transmission engagement arm, and return spring for bending or wear. If the old cable failed from drag rather than breakage, check that the drive linkage moves freely and is not packed with grass, rust, or debris.
Most failures come from normal cable stretch, moisture getting into the housing, corrosion of the inner wire, sharp kinks during storage, or repeated stress where the cable bends near the handle bracket. Poor routing after prior repairs can also cause premature wear by making the cable rub or bind during handle movement.
