When to Replace

  • HVAC fan only operates on the highest speed setting.
  • Fan does not work on one or more speed settings.
  • No air blows from the vents on any setting.
  • Visible corrosion or melting on the original resistor or connector.

Installation Tips

  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery before starting the installation.
  • The resistor is typically located under the passenger side dashboard, near the blower motor housing.
  • Inspect the original connector for signs of heat damage or melting; if damaged, use the included harness for replacement.
  • Ensure a secure connection for both the resistor and the wiring harness to prevent premature failure.

4 SIMPLE STEPS

4 SIMPLE STEPS

1. Access to your resistor (usually behind/ under the glove box); 2. Release the 2 screws that secure the resistor. Unplug the resistor connector and the resistor plug; 3. Disconnect the vehicle’s negative battery cable. Replace the old wire harness by cutting the wires and matching them to the new wire harness (take note of where each wire goes); 4. Reinstall with the new resistor. You can put some dielectric grease on in the resistor connector housing to avoid water intrusion.

FAQ

This part is designed for Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles from 2003–2006 (and 2007 Classic models) equipped with manual A/C controls and without rear A/C vents in the center console. Compatible models include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/2500/3500, Avalanche, Suburban, and Tahoe; GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500 and Yukon/Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade, ESV, and EXT.
This unit replaces OEM part number 89019088. It also cross-references with 973-405, 15-81086, 22807123, 1580582, and 1581086.
Common signs of a failing resistor include the blower motor not working at all, the fan only operating on the highest speed setting, or the blower motor continuing to run even after the vehicle is turned off. If you experience inconsistent fan speeds or no airflow at lower settings, the resistor is likely the culprit.
The original factory wiring harness often suffers from heat damage or corrosion at the connector pins, which can cause the new resistor to fail prematurely. Replacing the harness alongside the resistor ensures a clean, reliable electrical connection and prevents future overheating issues.
The resistor is typically located under the passenger side dashboard. Installation involves removing the old resistor, cutting the existing wires, and splicing in the new harness using the provided connectors. Because the gauge of the replacement wires may differ slightly from the original, ensure you use high-quality crimp connectors or solder the connections for a secure, long-lasting repair.
