When to Replace
- Inspect annually and replace every 3-5 years, or more frequently in areas with hard water.
- Replace immediately if the steel core wire is visible.
- Replace when the rod is less than 1/2 inch thick or is heavily pitted and corroded.
- Note: If a sulfur or "rotten egg" smell is present in hot water, an aluminum or zinc-aluminum rod may be a more suitable alternative.
Installation Tips
- Turn off the power (or gas) and cold water supply to the heater.
- Slightly open a hot water faucet to relieve pressure, then drain several gallons from the tank.
- Use a 1 1/16 inch socket with a breaker bar or impact wrench to remove the old anode rod.
- Flush any sediment from the tank before installing the new rod.
- Apply PTFE thread seal tape to the new rod's threads for a watertight seal.
- Install the new rod, tighten securely, restore water and power, and check for leaks.
